History of NEC

The present campus of New Era College is situated on a 8.5-acre piece of land located on top of the Hua Qiao Hill at Kajang, Selangor.

The campus land originally belonged to Kajang Hua Qiao School. It was occupied by the British army when the British colonial government enacted the Emergency Act in 1948 and was only returned to the school after Malaya’s independence in the 1950s. In 1974, the Hua Qiao School Trustees Board, which was formed by eight registered Chinese associations in Kajang, rented the land to Universiti Merdeka Sdn Bhd, intending for it to be used as the campus of Universiti Merdeka.

On 1 October 1989, the Hua Qiao School Trustees Board donated the land to Universiti Merdeka Sdn Bhd for establishing a Chinese tertiary educational institution. The first building completed on this piece of land, the Administration Building of Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia), was declared open on 19 December 1993.

Dong Jiao Zong Higher Learning Centre Bhd officially submitted the application for establishment of New Era College to the Ministry of Education on 27 August 1994. The College was approved by the Ministry of Education on 28 May 1997 and was registered with the Selangor Education Department on 28 October 1997. On 1 March 1998 the first intake of 148 students at New Era College started their courses under three departments: Department of Business Studies, Department of Information Technology and Department of Chinese Language and Literature.

In the long history of Chinese education in Malaysia spanning over a period of more than 180 years, the establishment of New Era College is yet another milestone and it brings hope for the realization of a complete Chinese education system in Malaysia.

New Era College is a non-profit tertiary educational institution established with the unwavering support of the Chinese community. When it first started its courses in 1998, there were not enough classrooms and some temporary rooms fabricated from containers had to be used. The problem of space shortage was only resolved when two new buildings costing RM26 million were completed in September 2001.

When the College was approved in 1997, a campaign was launched nationwide to raise fund for the “New Era College Building and Development Fund”. In order to provide more space for further development of the College, it was then decided that an academic block and a hostel block should be built. Construction works on the buildings commenced in 1999 and were completed by the end of 2001.

The building fund of RM26 million was raised through incessant efforts led by Dong Zong. Enthusiastic supporters of Chinese education from all walks of life channeled their contributions in cash and in kind. Various fund-raising activities were held in all corners of the country and these included jumble sales, dinners, walkathon, trishaw ride, cultural shows, etc. There were also donation campaigns such as sales of gold and silver coins, naming of classrooms, etc.

In 2001, the Penang Working Committee and Perak Working Committee were formed under the New Era College Building and Development Fund to coordinate fund-raising efforts in the northern states. Together with the southern states, they were able to mobilize the forces of the people around the country to contribute to the meaningful cause of establishing a tertiary educational institution.
